Greater Kreta Ayer in Singapore has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century, and was part of the first master plan of Singapore (Raffles Town Plan). Initially, it was home to a large population of Chinese immigrants who came to Singapore seeking work and better opportunities. Over time, the area became a hub of commerce and trade, with many multi-ethnic businesses and markets. Over the years, Greater Kreta Ayer bore witness to many of the milestones of the island’s history. Today, it remains an important cultural and historical center, with landmarks such as the Kreta Ayer neighborhood and the People's Park Complex.

The conservation and regeneration of Greater Kreta Ayer has been a priority of the state since the 1990s, to ensure the preservation and transmission of its cultural and historical significance. Greater Kreta Ayer is listed as a conservation area in Singapore and with measures including the restoration and preservation of historic buildings, cultural and festive activities, among others, to promote cultural transmission and urban renewal.

And also Hindu festivals along Pagoda Street. However, Greater Kreta Ayer is not confined to the Chinese.
