GREATER KRETA AYER
Uniquely local, globally connected

The district is a settlement of early Singaporean pioneers and one of the oldest historic areas in Singapore. It preserves many traditional local cultures and customs, as well as old buildings and complexes that appeal to tourists and locals alike. It is an excellent choice for exploring Singapore's culture and history, as well as a hub to Live, Work and Play.

With urbanisation and modernisation, this has led to a loss of traditional communities and culture, a homogenous commercial structure, and as well as weak regional integration. In order to conserve the history and culture of Chinatown, as well as to promote economic and urban development, Chinatown needs to be regenerated and renewed in order to maintain its unique charm and vitality.

Why does Greater Kreta Ayer need regeneration?

What is the background of Greater Kreta Ayer?

What can we do?

Greater Kreta Ayer is a historic district that has been the cultural heart of Singapore for over a century, attracting visitors and businesses from around the world. However, rapid urbanization and development have threatened the area's unique cultural and architectural heritage. To address these challenges, a comprehensive conservation and regeneration strategy is needed that balances economic growth with cultural preservation. This proposal provides a framework for such a strategy, based on the principles of Glocalisation, multiculturalism, local-focused businesses, participatory development, and sustainable development. The strategies prioritize the conservation of the area's historic buildings and cultural heritage, while also promoting sustainable economic growth and community engagement. By working with local stakeholders, the proposal aims to create a more liveable, attractive, and inclusive Greater Kreta Ayer precinct that can continue to thrive in the 21st century.
